1938-39 (Reserves)
The 64th season of Partick Thistle F.C.
scorers in CAPS
1. Sat-13-Aug-1938 [a] W2-1 Aberdeen (Scottish Reserve League)
APJ 15/8/1938. Henderson, Girdwood, McGregor, Swann, Ewing, Murray, Alston, Abbie, NEWALL, McCrindle, Linton. (1 og.)
Two strong defences made for a dull first half. The forwards made no impression. Things livened up after half-time and an og put Thistle 1-up. Aberdeen missed a pen then Newall doubled the lead. The Dons pulled one back but the points went South.
2. Tue-16-Aug-1938 [h] L1-2 Celtic (Scottish Reserve League)
GH 17/8/1938. Henderson, Girdwood, McGregor, Busby, EWING (pen), Murray, Alston, Abbie, Newall, McCrindle, Linton.
9,000 enjoyed a fast, entertaining game and saw Ewing give Thistle the lead with a penalty. Celtic equalised before half-time and the scorer made it a double for him mid-way through the second half. Celtic had that bit more to offer and deserved the points.
3. Sat-20-Aug-1938 [h] W6-1 Raith Rovers (Scottish Reserve League)
FFP 27/8/1938. Henderson, Swan, McGregor, Busby, Ewing, MURRAY, Alston, WALKER, NEWALL, McCRINDLE (3), Linton.
McCrindle opened the scoring (25) but Rovers had the best of things until half-time. Newall scored from a parried save then a pen reduced the lead. Rovers collapsed however and a 30-yarder by Murray then Walker and McCrindle (2) hit them for six.
4. Tue-23-Aug-1938 [h] L0-3 Aberdeen (Scottish Reserve League)
APJ 24/8/1938. Henderson, Girdwood, McGregor, Swan, Ewing, Morrison, Alston, Walker, Newall, Douglas, Fenton.
5,000 saw a rugged game with far too many fouls. Aberdeen played the better football and it paid dividends. A 20-yard drive gave Henderson no chance (3) and goals 50 and 51 made sure the points were leaving Firhill.
5. Sat-27-Aug-1938 [a] L1-3 Heart of Midlothian (Scottish Reserve League)
SC 29/8/1938. Line-up and scorer as yet unsourced.
6. Tue-30-Aug-1938 [h] L1-2 Rangers (Scottish Reserve League)
DC 31/8/1938. Henderson, Girdwood, McGregor, Busby, Ewing, Morrison, Alston, Douglas, NEWALL, Murray, Picken.
Rangers finished a one-sided first half two goals to the good. Newall (Thistle's best forward) lifted the spirits when he beat three men and scored a fine solo effort but it wasn't enough. Rangers' goals were scored by future Jags manager Thornton.
7. Sat-03-Sep-1938 [h] W3-1 Albion Rovers (Scottish Reserve League)
CE 7/9/1938. Henderson, Girdwood, McGregor, Busby, Ewing, Murray, Walker, Abbie, NEWALL(2), Douglas, Picken. Remaining scorer not reported.
Newall took a pass from Busby and gave Thistle the lead (1). Complacency and Rovers' off-side trap meant a struggle. Rovers went close but Newall scored again on half-time. Walker and Picken went close but it was mainly a midfield struggle
8. Fri-09-Sep-1938 [a] L0-2 Clyde (Scottish Reserve League)
DC 10/9/1938. Line-up as yet unsourced.
9. Wed-14-Sep-1938 [a] L0-2 Raith Rovers (Scottish Reserve League)
DC 15/9/1938. Henderson, Swan, McGregor, Busby, Ewing, Morrison, Alston, Abbie, Newall, Douglas, Picken.
A rather drab match” saved only by two goals from Rovers in the second half. A change of formation had the desired effect and Rovers took the lead (70). They scored again soon after. Thistle were only seen in attack spasmodically.
10. Sat-17-Sep-1938 [h] W4-1 Queen's Park (Scottish Reserve League)
GH 19/9/1938. Line-up and scorers as yet unsourced.
11. Sat-24-Sep-1938 [a] D4-4 Queen of the South (Scottish Reserve League)
ET 24/9/1938. McIntyre, Girdwood, McGregor, Abbie, Ewing, Morrison, Alston, Walker, NEWALL, DOUGLAS (2), Murray.
A header put Queens ahead (1) then Douglas wasted a good chance to level. Soon it was 2-0 but Newall reduced the lead (25) and Douglas equalised (30). With Thistle now on top Douglas scored again just on half-time. (Second half not reported).
12. Sat-01-Oct-1938 [h] L1-3 Kilmarnock (Scottish Reserve League)
ET 1/10/1938. Henderson, Girdwood, McGregor, Abbie, Swann, Morrison, Alston, Williamson, Newall, DOUGLAS, Picken.
Thistle had the best of the early play but their finishing was poor. Douglas hit the bar with the goal at his mercy. They paid the price when Killie went 2-up by half-time and 3-up (47). Thistle hit the bar, Henderson saved a pen then Douglas scored (75) before Killie missed a second pen.
13. Sat-08-Oct-1938 [a] W2-1 Hamilton Academical (Scottish Reserve League)
GH 10/10/1938. Line-up and scorers as yet unsourced.
14. Sat-29-Oct-1938 [h] W4-2 Ayr United (Scottish Reserve League)
ET 31/10/1938. Davidson, Swann, Curran, Abbie, Sutherland, Morrison, Alston, Walker, NEWALL (2), WILLIAMSON (2), Picken.
Thistle had virtually all the play and chances but it was Ayr who took the lead before Williamson equalised before half-time. Ayr went ahead again (54) but Williamson scored then a double by Newall put the points save.
15. Sat-05-Nov-1938 [a] L0-4 Motherwell (Scottish Reserve League)
MT 11/11/1938. Henderson, Thomson, Curran, Abbie, Sutherland, Busby, Alston, Walker, Newall, Williamson, Picken.
A bright start by Thistle came to nothing and play got scrappy for a while then Motherwell scored. Just on half-time it was 2-0 - merited on play. Goals 55 and 59 put the points out of reach although Thistle finished the stronger, it was too late.
16. Sat-12-Nov-1938 [a] D0-0 St Mirren (Scottish Reserve League)
SM 13/11/1938. Line-up as yet unsourced.
17. Sat-19-Nov-1938 [h] W4-1 Hibernian (Scottish Reserve League)
SC 21/11/1938. Line-up and scorers as yet unsourced.
18. Sat-26-Nov-1938 [a] D0-0 St Johnstone (Scottish Reserve League)
PRA 30/11/1938. Henderson, Girdwood, Curran, Swan, Sutherland, Murray, Abbie, Walker, Newall, Williamson, Alston.
The game was well enough contested but neither team found the net. Saints went closest when their No 9 missed a sitter in the early stages.
19. Sat-03-Dec-1938 [h] L2-3 Third Lanark (Scottish Reserve League)
GH 5/12/1938. Line-up and scorers as yet unsourced.
20. Sat-10-Dec-1938 [a] W3-2 Arbroath (Scottish Reserve League)
AH 16/12/1938. Henderson, Swan, Girdwood, Husband, Sutherland, Morrison, ALSTON (2), Williamson, Walker, Abbie, McCRINDLE.
Leading 2-0 at half-time, Arbroath took their foot off the gas and only had themselves to blame. Alston (moved to inside-left at half-time) scored twice inside 5 minutes then Arbroath sent a penalty past the post. Minutes later McCrindle scored the winner.
21. Sat-17-Dec-1938 [h] D1-1 Falkirk (Scottish Reserve League)
FH 24/12/1938. Henderson, Girdwood, Swann, Husband, Busby, Morrison, "Junior", Williamson, ADDIE, Alston, Smith.
Addie headed in a Smith cross (27) for a slender half-time lead. It was just about deserved on play. Falkirk played better in the second half and deservedly equalised then Thistle had to defend in depth to hold on to their point.
22. Mon-26-Dec-1938 [h] W3-0 Clyde (Scottish Reserve League)
DC 27/12/1938. Line-up and scorers as yet unsourced.

GH 6/3/1939. Line-up as yet unsourced.
30. Sat-11-Mar-1939 [h] W2-1 Motherwell (Scottish Reserve League)
MT 17/3/1939. Johnstone, Swan, Murray, Husband, Sutherland, Morrison (A), Morrison (R), Abbie, Black, PICKEN, Newall. (1 og.)
Picken opened the scoring (16) and Motherwell headed home (45). The post saved Thistle just after half-time and a draw looked the likeliest outcome until an loose ball was sliced past the Motherwell keeper (75) for a fortunate win.
31. Sat-18-Mar-1939 [h] W5-1 St Mirren (Scottish Reserve League)
GH 20/3/1939. Henderson, Swann, "Junior", Husband, Ewing, Morrison (A), MORRISON (R), Busby, Abbie, Picken, Campbell. Remaining scorers as yet unsourced.
32. Wed-29-Mar-1939 [a] L2-3 Hibernian (Scottish Reserve League)
EEN 30/3/1939. Donald, Swann, Murray, Abbey, Busby, Morrison (G), MORRISON (R), Picken, Wilson, SMITH, Campbell.
Hibs were the better side and deserved their win on the night. Thistle soon found themselves 2-down. Slack defending let in Smith from close range for 2-1 but when Donald took too long man and ball were bundled in. Morrison scored (80) but it wasn't enough.
33. Sat-01-Apr-1939 [h] W2-1 St Johnstone (Scottish Reserve League)
PRA 5/4/1939. Henderson, "Newman", Stewart, Abbie, Ewing, Morrison (A), Morrison (R), Busby, NEWALL (2), Picken, "Junior".
St Johnstone hit the bar early on then Newall headed home, had a goal disallowed then scored again. The second half was St Johnstone's on chances. They reduced the lead but couldn't find an equaliser.
34. Tue-04-Apr-1939 [h] W6-2 Queen of the South (Scottish Reserve League)
DGS 5/4/1939. Henderson, Swan, Wilson, Abbie, Ewing, McLeod, Morrison (R), BUSBY (3), NEWALL (2), Picken, CAMPBELL.
Newall scored in the first minute. He scored again as did Campbell mid-way through the first half. Queens scored just after the break but Busby grabbed a 2nd half hat-trick. Picken's facial injury (65) reduced Thistle to 10 and Queens scored again.
35. Fri-07-Apr-1939 [a] L1-2 Third Lanark (Scottish Reserve League)
DR 8/4/1939. "SMITH"*. Line-up as yet unsourced. Ewing sustained a broken leg (55) the noise of the break being heard in the stand. *DR reported Smith" resembled McSpadyen" and, indeed it was. He re-signed for Thistle a week later.
It was a lacklustre affair. “Smith” gave Thistle the lead finding the bottom corner from a Neil pass but a minute later Henderson slipped at a free-kick and it was 1-1. A shot from 20 yards (88) won the points for Thirds.
36. Wed-12-Apr-1939 [a] W7-1 Queen's Park (Scottish Reserve League)
DR 13/4/1939. WALKER (2), NEWALL (2), MORRISON, PICKEN (2). Line-up as yet unsourced. Thistle played 3 trialists including Miller (Kilwinning Rangers) @ No 11.
37. Fri-14-Apr-1939 [a] L1-2 Rangers (Scottish Reserve League)
GH 15/4/1939. Henderson, Swann, Murray, Abbie, Busby, "Newman", MORRISON (R), "Newman", Newall, Picken, Campbell.
The teams shared headed goals in the first half - Morrison getting Thistle's - but a penalty after half-time gave Rangers both (rather fortunate) points. There was very little between the teams.
38. Mon-17-Apr-1939 [a] L1-5 Celtic (Scottish Reserve League)
DR 18/4/1939. Henderson, Swann, McKinnon, Abbie, Busby, Hughes, Walker, McCrindle, NEWALL, Picken, Campbell.
A penalty (12) put Celtic ahead then Swann was outpaced for 2-0. A third goal put them in easy street although Newall (Thistle's only threat) scored from close in. The second half was a formality and Celtic made in 5-1 mid-way through the half.
39. Sat-22-Apr-1939 [h] W4-0 Arbroath (Scottish Reserve League)
AG 29/4/1939. Henderson, Girdwood, Swann, Abbie, "Junior", Murray, Morrison, WILLIAMSON, NEWALL (2), McCRINDLE, Campbell.
McCrindle scored after “a spectacular solo run” (20) then Arbroath hit the post. They lost their No 5 to injury just after half-time and Williamson and Newall scored while he was off for treatment. Back to 11 men they fought on but Newall got his second near the end. A flattering win.
40. Tue-25-Apr-1939 [h] W4-1 Hamilton Academical (Scottish Reserve League)
DC & DR 26/4/1939. ABBIE. Line-up as yet unsourced.
41. Sat-29-Apr-1939 [a] L1-4 Falkirk (Scottish Reserve League)
FH 3/5/1939. Henderson, Gilchrist, McKinnon, Swann, McIntosh, Hughes, Morrison (R), WALKER, Abbie, McCrindle, Morrison (A).
Falkirk's wingers were the main danger. They took an early lead before Abbie hit the post but it was 3-0 at half-time. Walker pulled one back but Thistle made no impression - even after Falkirk went down to 10 men and with two passengers due to injury.
