Partick Thistle Reserves Season 1934-35
1934-35 (Reserves)
The 60th season of Partick Thistle F.C.
| scorers in CAPS | |
1. Sat-11-Aug-1934 [a] W1-0 Aberdeen (Scottish Alliance)
– APJ 13/8/1934. Gourlay, Young, Murray, Baigrie, McAllister, Pritchard, Miller, Wyllie (J), WYLLIE (G), Stewart, Regan.
– 7,000 saw Aberdeen have the greater share of the play but their finishing was weak. Wyllie scored with 10 minutes to go and a draw was the least the homesters deserved but a late goal ruled off-side was all they could muster.
2. Sat-18-Aug-1934 [h] D1-1 Hamilton Academical (Scottish Alliance)
– GH 20/8/1934. Line-up and scorer as yet unsourced.
3. Sat-25-Aug-1934 [a] W3-0 Queen of the South (Scottish Alliance)
– SP 26/8/1934. WYLLIE, MILLER, BALLANTYNE. Line-up as yet unsourced but included Gourlay, McLeod and Ness.
– An easy win for Thistle against Queens who struggled all afternoon. Goals by Wyllie and Miller put Thistle ahead at half-time and Ness rounded off a comfortable win after half-time.
4. Fri-31-Aug-1934 [h] L1-6 Rangers (Scottish Alliance)
– DC 1/9/1934. BALLANTYNE. Line-up as yet unsourced.
5. Fri-07-Sep-1934 [a] L0-5 Heart of Midlothian (Scottish Alliance)
– SC 8/9/1934. Line-up as yet unsourced.
– Despite Thistle fielding a strong XI for this Friday night match, Hearts' superiority at half-back and better finishing made for a big score but the margin was slightly flattering.
6. Sat-15-Sep-1934 [h] W5-1 St Johnstone (Scottish Alliance)
– TSP 15/9/1934. Thomson, Young, Murray, Baigrie, Prior, Pritchard, Neish, Wyllie (J), HASTIE (3), Stewart, REGAN (2).
– The match was more or less won and lost by half-time. Hastie scored (1) but after some persistent pressure Saints equalised then had a goal disallowed. They fell away badly however and goals by Regan (2) and Hastie made it 4-1. Hastie completed his hat-trick in the 2nd half.
7. Wed-19-Sep-1934 [a] D3-3 St Johnstone (Scottish Alliance)
– PRA. 22/9/1934. Wilson, Young, Thomson, Baigrie, Prior, Pritchard, NEISH, Lyle, HAMILTON (2), Stewart, Regan.
– Goals following a free-kick and a smart low shot gave Saints a 2-goal lead. Hamilton scored off a post for 2-1 but a lob over Wilson made it 3-1 at half-time. Neish tucked away a parried save and Hamilton drove home for a point. Thistle were unlucky not to score a 4th.
8. Sat-29-Sep-1934 [h] W3-1 Kilmarnock (Scottish Alliance)
– KH 5/10/1934. Duncan, Young, Prior, Robertson, Murray, Pritchard, NEISH, Wyllie, Lyle, Hastie, REGAN. Remaining Thistle scorer not reported.
– Killie started well and hit the post early on but Neish opened for Thistle soon after. Kilmarnock equalised but a mistake at the back let in Regan for 2-1 at half-time. Lyle's penalty was saved, the keeper injured in the resulting scramble. A Regan cross was headed in for 3-1. Tough match.
9. Sat-06-Oct-1934 [a] D4-4 Kilmarnock (Scottish Alliance)
– KH 12/10/1934. Johnstone, Young, Prior, Baigrie, McAllister, Pritchard, HASTIE, NEISH, McLENNAN (2), Stewart, Regan.
– In dreadful weather and against the elements Hastie gave Thistle the lead but Kilmarnock hit back with 3 goals by half-time. Things looked worse soon after the break when a penalty made it 4 but in a remarkable fightback Neish and McLennan (2) earned a hard-won point.
10. Sat-13-Oct-1934 [h] W3-2 Queen's Park (Scottish Alliance)
– GH 15/10/1934. Line-up and scorers as yet unsourced.
11. Sat-27-Oct-1934 [a] D2-2 St Mirren (Scottish Alliance)
– GH 29/10/1934. Line-up and scorers as yet unsourced.
12. Sat-03-Nov-1934 [h] W3-2 Hibernian (Scottish Alliance)
– SC 5/11/1934. Line-up and scorers as yet unsourced.
13. Sat-10-Nov-1934 [a] D3-3 Motherwell (Scottish Alliance)
– MT 16/11/1934. Gourlay, Young, Kennedy, Prior, McDonald, Pritchard, NESS (2), Wyllie (J), WYLLIE (G), Ballantyne, Stewart.
– Ness and Ballantyne shone as Thistle took the lead through Wyllie (G). Almost immediately Motherwell levelled then Young went off injured. Motherwell scored after half-time but Ness equalised then the process was repeated for 3-3. An entertaining game and a 10-man fighting point.
14. Sat-17-Nov-1934 [a] D1-1 Dundee (Scottish Alliance)
– DC 19/11/1934. Gourlay, Prior, Duncan, Wyllie (J), Anderson, Pritchard, Ness, McCallum, WYLLIE (G), Stewart, Bain.
– Dundee deserved their first half lead but the second half saw Thistle take command and "waltz round a woefully weak home team". Wyllie scored the equaliser but it should have been more. The Dundee keeper and bad luck were to blame.
15. Sat-24-Nov-1934 [a] W3-2 Beith (Scottish Alliance)
– GH 26/11/1934. Line-up and scorers as yet unsourced.
16. Sat-01-Dec-1934 [h] W9-2 Motherwell (Scottish Alliance)
– MT 7/12/1934. Gourlay, Prior, Black, WHITE, Quigg, McAllister, Neish, HASTIE (5), WYLLIE (J), STEWART, BAIN.
– A 2-goal lead for Motherwell gave no indication what was to come. 7 goals in a remarkable scoring burst through Stewart, White, Hastie (4) and Bain made it 7-2 at half-time. Wyllie headed home a Neish free-kick (47) and Hastie scored from close in (75) to end the fun.
17. Sat-08-Dec-1934 [a] D2-2 Hibernian (Scottish Alliance)
– SC 10/12/1934. Line-up and scorers as yet unsourced.
18. Sat-15-Dec-1934 [h] W2-1 Beith (Scottish Alliance)
– SP 16/12/1934. NEISH (2). Line-up as yet unsourced but included Gourlay.
– An excellent game in which Thistle did enough to get the better of a good Beith team. After some wayward shooting two goals by Neish before half-time put them in control although Beith pulled one back in the 2nd half. Gourlay had some fined saves.
19. Tue-25-Dec-1934 [h] W3-0 Aberdeen (Scottish Alliance)
– APJ 26/12/1934. Johnstone, Prior, Thomson, Kennedy, Quigg, Pritchard, NEISH (2), Wyllie (J), Stark, Hastie, BAIN.
– It took Thistle until just on half-time to break down the Dons defence when a Neish shot was diverted into his own goal by the keeper. Brilliant saves by Johnstone maintained the lead then Neish and Bain scored in the dying minutes.
20. Sun-30-Dec-1934 [a] W4-2 Queen's Park (Scottish Alliance)
– GH 31/12/1934. Line-up and scorers as yet unsourced.
21. Sat-05-Jan-1935 [h] L0-2 Heart of Midlothian (Scottish Alliance)
– SC 7/1/1935. Line-up as yet unsourced.
22. Sat-12-Jan-1935 [a] D1-1 Rangers (Scottish Alliance)
– GH 14/1/1935. Line-up and scorer as yet unsourced.
23. Sat-19-Jan-1935 [h] W1-0 Celtic (Scottish Alliance)
– GH 21/1/1935. Line-up and scorer as yet unsourced.
24. Sat-02-Feb-1935 [a] W6-3 Hamilton Academical (Scottish Alliance)
– SP 3/2/1935. Line-up and scorers as yet unsourced.
25. Tue-26-Feb-1935 [h] D1-1 Celtic (Scottish 2nd XI Cup 1st Round)
– GH 27/2/1935. Gourlay, Prior, Bulloch, Elliott, Quigg, Baigrie, Neish, Wylie (J), Lyle, HASTIE, Regan.
– Celtic were on top in the first half and led 1-0 at half-time. After the break Thistle turned the tables and a goal by Regan earned a replay. 14,000 saw an equitable draw. A testament to the popularity of what was known as the "sixpenny gate".
26. Sat-02-Mar-1935 [a] L1-3 Galston (Scottish Alliance)
– SP 3/3/1935 & KH 8/3/1935. Line-up as yet unsourced. (1 og.)
– Galston had the nippier forwards. It was even until Galston scored on 30 minutes. A second goal followed then Thistle missed a penalty. The second half was mostly the home team who scored again. Thistle scored late on (an og) and the game ended in an ill-tempered melee.
27. Wed-06-Mar-1935 [a] L0-5 Celtic (Scottish 2nd XI Cup 1st Round replay)
– GH 7/3/1935. Gourlay, Prior, Bulloch, Baigrie, Quigg, McLeod, Neish, Wyllie (J), Lyle, Hastie, Regan.
– 11,000 saw a disappointingly one-sided replay in which Celtic were on top throughout. Only Gourlay emerged with any credit. They opened the scoring (9) then a penalty was blasted over but the ref ordered a retake for 2-0 (19). 3 goals in the last 10 minutes made for a poor exit.
28. Sat-09-Mar-1935 [h] W6-0 Galston (Scottish Alliance)
– KH 15/3/1935. WYLLIE (J) (3), WYLLIE (G), STEWART, McDONALD. Line-up as yet unsourced.
– A week later revenge was sweet. Stewart scored in 4 minutes then Wylie (J) (2), McDonald and Wyllie (G) made it 5-0, the Galston defence all over the place. Wyllie (J) scored from 25 yards (66). Galston "displayed a woeful lack of courage".
29. Tue-19-Mar-1935 [h] W2-1 St Mirren (Scottish Alliance)
– GH 20/3/1925. STEWART (2). Line-up as yet unsourced. The line-up also included Prior, Quigg and several trialists.
– St Mirren took the lead (17) but Stewart levelled (35). He scored the winner (67).
30. Wed-27-Mar-1935 [h] D3-3 Dundee (Scottish Alliance)
– DC 27/3/1935. Gourlay, Black, Prior, Quigg, White, Baigrie, Lyle, Wyllie (J), STEWART, PRITCHARD (2), Brown.
– The first half was drab, the second much better. Pritchard gave Thistle the lead (20) but it was 1-1 (35). He scored again (55) but it was 2-2 soon afterwards. Stewart scored (67) but once again it was all level (70). A rousing finish saw the Dundee keeper save a point.
31. Tue-02-Apr-1935 [h] D3-3 Queen of the South (Scottish Alliance)
– GH 3/4/1935. LYLE, REGAN (2). Line-up as yet unsourced.
32. Wed-17-Apr-1935 [a] W4-1 Grange Rovers (Grange Rovers Fundraiser)
– FH 20/4/1935. Earl's Park, Grangemouth. Johnstone, Prior, Cummings, Baigrie, Quigg, Wyllie, Neish, McLAREN, McLENNAN (3), Stewart, Regan.
– George Cummings was the star attraction to benefit his former club in this fundraiser, a mixed eleven of reserves and first teamers. McLaren and McLennan combined well for all goals, and the result was never in doubt. Rovers scored a late consolation.
33. Mon-29-Apr-1935 [a] L0-6 Celtic (Scottish Alliance)
– GH 30/4/1935. Line-up as yet unsourced.
