The 57th season of Partick Thistle F.C.
| scorers in CAPS | |
1. Sat-08-Aug-1931 [h] W7-0 Morton (Scottish Alliance)
– GH 10/8/1931. Line-up and scorers as yet unsourced.
2. Sat-15-Aug-1931 [a] W4-1 Falkirk (Scottish Alliance)
– FH 22/8/1931. Wilson, Hogg, Fitzsimmons, Miller, Murray, McGillivray, TURNER (3), Cope, WYLLIE, McGourty, Simpson.
– The first and best goal of the game came for Falkirk (1). A hat-trick by Turner and a single strike by Wyllie made for an emphatic win, indeed the Falkirk keeper kept the score down. A strong Thistle side had much more to offer on the day.
3. Tue-18-Aug-1931 [h] W4-3 Celtic (Scottish Alliance)
– GH 19/8/1931. WYLLIE (2), TURNER, McGOURTY (pen). Line-up as yet unsourced.
– Celtic had the better start and took the lead from the pen spot but Wyllie scored twice then Celtic scored again for 2-2 at half-time. Turner and McGourty (penalty) extended the lead and Thistle were on top for most of the second half. A late Celtic goal made it look closer.
4. Sat-22-Aug-1931 [h] W5-3 Falkirk (Scottish Alliance)
– FH 26/8/1931. Wilson, Hogg (R), McFarlane, Miller, Hogg (A), McGillivray, TURNER (2), Pope, WYLLIE (2), Murray, JENKINS.
– Thistle hit Falkirk with two quick goals from Turner and Jenkins but Falkirk hit back and levelled before half-time despite some fine goalkeeping by Wilson. They went ahead (53) but 2 goals in 2 minutes by Wyllie then Turner made it 5-3. Thistle went top.
5. Sat-29-Aug-1931 [a] W4-1 Leith Athletic (Scottish Alliance)
– SC 31/8/1931. WYLLIE (2), JENKINS, McGOURTY. Line-up as yet unsourced.
– Wyllie got the only goal of the first half. He scored again after half-time as did Jenkins and McGourty. Leith sored (83). The scoreline flattered Thistle. Leith were better than the score would suggest.
6. Sat-05-Sep-1931 [h] W1-0 Beith (Scottish Alliance)
– GH 7/9/1931. Line-up and scorer as yet unsourced.
7. Fri-11-Sep-1931 [a] D0-0 Rangers (Scottish Alliance)
– GH 12/9/1931. DR 10/9/1931 (predicted) Wilson, Hogg (R), A N Other, Miller, Hogg (A), Boardman, Turner, Jenkins, Morrison, Murray, Simpson.
8. Sat-19-Sep-1931 [h] W4-2 Hamilton Academical (Scottish Alliance)
– SC 21/9/1931. Line-up and scorers as yet unsourced.
9. Sat-26-Sep-1931 [a] D2-2 Kilmarnock (Scottish Alliance)
– KH 1/10/1931. Wilson, Hogg (R), Fitzsimmons, Hogg (A), McAllister, McGillivray, Pope, MILLER, Wyllie, Murray, JENKINS.
– Thistle had the best of the early exchanges then Kilmarnock got on top and took the lead. In a rare attack Jenkins headed home a Pope cross to level then poor defending gifted Miller an open goal for 2-1 at half-time. A goal following a free-kick was protested as hand-ball but it stood.
10. Sat-03-Oct-1931 [h] W2-1 Aberdeen (Scottish Alliance)
– APJ 5/10/1931. Wilson, Hogg, Fitzsimmons, Miller. Hogg (A), McGILLIVRAY, Turner, POPE, Wyllie, Murray, Jenkins.
– League leaders and unbeaten, Thistle survived early Aberdeen pressure then Pope put them 1-up. In the 2nd half Jenkins skied a good chance then Aberdeen equalised but McGillivray got a late winner, the Dons' defence looking none too clever.
11. Wed-07-Oct-1931 [a] L0-2 Dundee (Scottish Alliance)
– DC 8/10/1931. Wilson, Hogg, Fitzsimmons, Miller, Boardman, McGillivray, Pope, Jenkins, Wyllie, Murray, Simpson.
– Dundee smashed Thistle's unbeaten record with a strong display. They were second best for most of the game. A 35-yard run and the ball was slipped past the advancing Wilson. Dundee hit the post then the bar before a scrambled second.
12. Sat-10-Oct-1931 [h] D1-1 Heart of Midlothian (Scottish Alliance)
– DR 13/10/1931. Line-up as yet unsourced. JENKINS.
– Hearts went ahead (5) but Jenkins equalised after striking the crossbar. Neither of the opposing centre-forwards (Battles & Morrison) made a splash, the Hearts man merely testing his fitness and the Jag unable to get his forwards moving in unison.
13. Sat-17-Oct-1931 [h] L1-3 Third Lanark (Scottish Alliance)
– GH 19/10/1931. Line-up and scorer as yet unsourced.
14. Sat-24-Oct-1931 [a] W5-3 Third Lanark (Scottish Alliance)
– GH 26/10/1931. Line-up and scorers as yet unsourced.
15. Sat-31-Oct-1931 [h] W5-1 Ayr United (Scottish Alliance)
– GH 2/11/1931. Line-up and scorers as yet unsourced.
16. Sat-07-Nov-1931 [a] D2-2 Motherwell (Scottish Alliance)
– MT 13/11/1931. Wilson, Hogg, Fitzsimmons, McAllister, Donnelly, Miller, Pope, Grove, WYLLIE, Murray, McGillivray. Player credited with first Thistle goal as yet unsourced.
– Motherwell took the lead (20) then controversy struck when a shot was allegedly fisted past the keeper (possibly by Wyllie) for 1-1. Wyllie scored after half-time (off-side vigorously protested) but a late goal gave vexed Motherwell some consolation.
17. Sat-14-Nov-1931 [h] W3-0 Airdrieonians (Scottish Alliance)
– CL 21/11/1931. MILLER, WYLLIE, POPE. Line-up as yet unsourced.
18. Sat-21-Nov-1931 [a] W1-0 Airdrieonians (Scottish Alliance)
– CE 25/11/1931. Wilson, Hogg (R), Fitzsimmons, HOGG (A), McAllister, Miller, Ness, Grove, Morrison, Murray, Jenkins.
– Strangely, Airdrie had the best of the chances and more of the play. The goal that separated the teams was a cracking 30-yard free-kick from Hogg which nestled in the top corner. Still top of the league.
19. Sat-28-Nov-1931 [a] W3-1 Heart of Midlothian (Scottish Alliance)
– SC 30/11/1931. MORRISON, POPE, MURRAY. Line-up as yet unsourced.
– 10,000 saw 2nd v 1st - and Hearts' first home defeat of the season. Poor defensive work made it easy for Morrison, Pope and Murray to give Thistle a 3-0 lead at half-time. Hearts improved after the break and had a goal disallowed (not over the line) but they did score before the end.
20. Sat-05-Dec-1931 [h] L1-2 Rangers (Scottish Alliance)
– GH 7/12/1931. Line-up and scorer as yet unsourced.
21. Sat-12-Dec-1931 [h] W2-1 Queen's Park (Scottish Alliance)
– GH 14/12/1931. Line-up and scorers as yet unsourced.
22. Sat-19-Dec-1931 [a] L0-3 Aberdeen (Scottish Alliance)
– APJ 21/12/1931. Wilson, Hogg, Fitzsimmons, Boardman, McAllister, Miller, Pope, Grove, Wyllie, Murray, Jenkins.
– Sitting top of the league but with more games played than the chasers, Thistle were largely on the back foot and they found themselves 2-down at half-time. A quick third settled things although Thistle had their chances after half-time.
23. Fri-25-Dec-1931 [h] L3-4 St Mirren (Scottish Alliance)
– GH 26/12/1931. Line-up and scorers as yet unsourced.
24. Sat-26-Dec-1931 [h] D2-2 Leith Athletic (Scottish Alliance)
– SC 28/12/1931. Line-up and scorers as yet unsourced.
25. Sat-16-Jan-1932 [h] W3-2 Kilmarnock (Scottish Alliance)
– GH 18/1/1932. Line-up and scorers as yet unsourced.
26. Sat-23-Jan-1932 [h] D2-2 Dundee (Scottish Alliance)
– DC 25/1/1932. Line-up and scorers as yet unsourced.
27. Sat-06-Feb-1932 [h] L0-1 Motherwell (Scottish 2nd XI Cup 1st Round)
– MT 12/2/1931. Wilson, Hogg, Fitzsimmons, Elliott, McAllister, Boardman, Jenkins, Pope, Simpson, Murray, Turner.
– A well taken goal after about 20 mins put Thistle behind. The visitors were good value for their lead at half-time. Thistle had lots of pressure in the second half but could make nothing of the Motherwell defence.
28. Sat-13-Feb-1932 [a] L0-3 Celtic (Scottish Alliance)
– GH 15/2/1932. Line-up as yet unsourced.
29. Sat-27-Feb-1932 [a] L0-2 St Mirren (Scottish Alliance)
– GH 29/2/1932. Line-up as yet unsourced.
30. Sat-19-Mar-1932 [h] D2-2 Motherwell (Scottish Alliance)
– GH 21/3/1932. Line-up and scorers as yet unsourced.
31. Sat-02-Apr-1932 [a] D4-4 Morton (Scottish Alliance)
– GH 4/4/1932. Line-up and scorers as yet unsourced.
32. Sat-09-Apr-1932 [a] L1-3 Beith (Scottish Alliance)
– SP 10/4/1932. SIMPSON. Line-up as yet unsourced but included R. Hogg.
– Simpson put Thistle ahead and they merited their lead at h-t but a much improved 2nd half performance saw Beith finish worthy winners.
33. Mon-25-Apr-1932 [a] W3-1 Queen's Park (Scottish Alliance)
– GH 26/4/1932. JENKINS, MORRISON (2). Line-up as yet unsourced.
