KH 15/9/1927. Line-up as yet unsourced. AN 13/9/1927 GRAY (2).
The match promised much at the start but soon fell away badly - thanks mainly to the referee who never kept a grip of the play. There were three penalties, all converted, two for Thistle by Gray.
6. Sat-17-Sep-1927 [h] W5-1 Raith Rovers (Scottish Alliance)
LVA. ELLIOTT (3), McKAY, HEANEY. Line-up as yet unsourced.
Thistle were on top from the start. Their forwards were sharper, the defence more solid. Elliot scored three and McKay one before half-time - thanks mainly to fine play by Simpson. A free-kick reduced the lead but Heaney scored near the end.
7. Sat-24-Sep-1927 [a] L2-4 Falkirk (Scottish Alliance)
FH 28/9/1927. Graham, Fraser, Williamson, Richmond, Hunter, Boardman, Wilkie, McLeod, TORBET, FYFE, Simpson.
A tight first half saw Thistle trail 1-0 at half-time but in the second half they were well beaten. They were 3-0 down before a free-kick by Torbet found the net but it was 4-1 minutes later. Fyfe scored late on but the points stayed at home.
8. Sat-01-Oct-1927 [h] W3-0 Hibernian (Scottish Alliance)
SP 2/10/1927. Line-up as yet unsourced. AN 3/10/1927 McLEOD (2), WILKIE.
9. Sat-15-Oct-1927 [h] W5-2 Queen's Park (Scottish Alliance)
SP 16/10/1927. Line-up as yet unsourced. AN 17/10/1927 WILLIAMSON (4), SIMPSON.
10. Sat-22-Oct-1927 [h] W3-2 Aberdeen (Scottish Alliance)
APJ 24/10/1927. Campbell, Richmond, Munro, Glencross, McMillan, HUNTER, WILKIE, McLeod, WILLIAMSON, Hutchison, Simpson.
An early penalty for a trip put Aberdeen ahead and they doubled the lead before half-time. With the strong wind at their backs Thistle were transformed. Wilkie and Hunter levelled things and Williamson scored the winner to complete the fightback.
11. Sat-29-Oct-1927 [a] L1-3 Heart of Midlothian (Scottish Alliance)
SC 31/10/1928. WILLIAMSON. Line-up as yet unsourced.
12. Sat-05-Nov-1927 [a] L2-3 Aberdeen (Scottish Alliance)
APJ 7/11/1927. Campbell, Paton, Munro, Boardman, Fraser (D), Hunter, Wilkie, McLeod, Hair, Fraser (W), SIMPSON (2).
Two goals by Simpson weren't enough. On balance Thistle were the better side but a hat-trick for the homesters' No 9 proved decisive. The brief P&J report does not explain why they enjoyed "a large slice of luck".
13. Sat-12-Nov-1927 [h] W4-2 Airdrieonians (Scottish Alliance)
SP 13/11/1927. Line-up as yet unsourced. AN 14/11/1927 TORRANCE (2), GIBSON, SIMPSON.
14. Sat-19-Nov-1927 [a] L2-3 St Johnstone (Scottish Alliance)
PRA 23/11/1927. Campbell, Fraser, Munro, Richmond, McMullan, Hunter, Neil, McLeod, Heaney, SIMPSON, TORBET.
Erratic finishing and an injury to McMullan midway through the first half probably cost Thistle the points. All the goals game after half-time. Torbet and Simpson scored in quick time but the 10 men faded and three goals ensured the points stayed in Perth.
15. Sat-26-Nov-1927 [a] L1-5 Motherwell (Scottish Alliance)
MT 2/12/1927. Campbell, Fraser, Munro, Richmond, Neil, Hunter, HEANEY, McLeod, Williamson, Simpson, Torbet.
Thistle had some early chances but Motherwell were soon in command and went ahead but Heaney headed home for 1-1 at half-time. The 2nd half was one-sided. Thistle offered little and Motherwell ran out easy winners.
16. Sat-03-Dec-1927 [a] W3-1 Ayr United (Scottish Alliance)
SP 4/12/1927. Line-up as yet unsourced. AN 5/12/1927 FRASER, TORBET, ROBERTSON.
17. Wed-07-Dec-1927 [a] W2-0 Dundee (Scottish Alliance)
DET 7/12/1927. Campbell, Calderwood, Munro, Richmond, Williamson, Hunter, Ness, Boardman, HAIR, Fraser, TORBET.
Weak finishing by both sides brought no rewards but eventually Hair gave Thistle the lead when he finished off a Ness cross. In the second half Boardman shot straight at the keeper and Ness continued to be the main threat but it was Torbet who secured the points late on.
18. Sat-10-Dec-1927 [h] W2-1 St Johnstone (Scottish Alliance)
PRA 14/12/1927. Williamson, Hair. Line-up as yet unsourced.
Playing some attractive football, Saints took an early lead but it was cancelled out by Williamson and Hair.
19. Sat-17-Dec-1927 [h] W6-1 Heart of Midlothian (Scottish Alliance)
SP 18/12/1927. Line-up as yet unsourced. AN 19/12/1927 HAIR (2), SIMPSON (2), RICHMOND, TORBET.
20. Mon-26-Dec-1927 [h] L1-3 Rangers (Scottish Alliance)
GH 27/12/1927. Line-up and scorer as yet unsourced.
21. Sat-07-Jan-1928 [h] W9-0 Morton (Scottish Alliance)
PGE 11/1/1928. Line-up and scorers as yet unsourced. The young Thistle team go two better than the "big" team and score nine.
22. Sat-14-Jan-1928 [a] D1-1 Raith Rovers (Scottish Alliance)
FFP 21/1/1928. Campbell, Calderwood, Munro, Neil, Williamson, Hunter, Wilkie, McLeod, Heaney, SIMPSON, Torbet.
The teams made the best of the waterlogged pitch and produced a decent match. Torbet hit the post in Thistle's first attack. A penalty gave Raith the lead at half-time. They missed a second spot-kick before Simpson equalised.
23. Sat-21-Jan-1928 [a] L1-5 Rangers (Scottish Alliance)
SP 22/1/1928. Line-up and scorer as yet unsourced.
24. Sat-28-Jan-1928 [h] D5-5 Falkirk (Scottish Alliance)
FH 1/2/1928. Line-up as yet unsourced. AN 30/1/1928 HAIR (3), FRASER, TORBET.
25. Sat-04-Feb-1928 [a] W3-2 Hibernian (Scottish Alliance)
SC 6/2/1928. HAIR (2), McLEOD. Line-up as yet unsourced.
Although two of Thistle's goals were scored while Hibs (sitting second bottom) were reduced to 10 men through injury, they were the better team throughout and deserved both points. They monopolised the second half and remained in 6th place.
26. Sat-11-Feb-1928 [h] L0-2 Rangers (Scottish 2nd XI Cup 1st Round)
SP 12/2/1928. Line-up as yet unsourced.
27. Sat-25-Feb-1928 [a] W3-2 Airdrieonians (Scottish Alliance)
SP 26/2/1928. Line-up as yet unsourced. AN 27/2/1928 WILLIAMSON (2), McLEOD.
28. Sat-03-Mar-1928 [h] W3-0 Ayr United (Scottish Alliance)
SP 4/3/1928. Line-up as yet unsourced. AN 5/3/1928 HAIR, DUNNING. Remaining scorer unknown.
29. Sat-31-Mar-1928 [a] L0-6 St Mirren (Scottish Alliance)
SP 1/4/1928. Line-up as yet unsourced.
30. ?Tue-03-Apr-1928 [h] W2-1 Motherwell (Scottish Alliance)
By comparing the published league tables with our known results, we've deduced that this match was played sometime in the last week of March or the first week in April 1928, and that Thistle defeated Motherwell at home by 2 goals to 1. Line-up and scorers as yet unsourced.
31. Tue-17-Apr-1928 [h] D3-3 St Mirren (Scottish Alliance)
PDE 18/4/1928. Line-up and scorers as yet unsourced.
32. Fri-20-Apr-1928 [a] W4-2 East Fife Select (Friendly)
LVA 28/4/1928. Jackson, Fraser, Munro, Richmond, Williamson, Hunter, Wilkie, McLEOD, HAIR (2), FRASER, Simpson. Part of the deal for signing Munro and Hunter from Denbeath Star FC.
Hair opened the scoring then Fraser doubled the lead but the Select began to gel and pulled one back by half-time. They levelled and stirred Thistle through Hair and McLeod then "lapsed again into indifference" their job done. Simpson was outstanding.
