1922-23 (Reserves)
The 48th season of Partick Thistle F.C.
scorers in CAPS
1. Tue-15-Aug-1922 [h] W4-1 Queen's Park (Scottish Alliance)
GH 16/8/1922. Ferguson, O'Hare, Bulloch, Morrison, Wilson, Lyon, BLAIR (2), Ballantyne, "N" (2), McFarlane, Anderson.
It wasn't until the second half that Thistle began to show their superiority. Their cause was helped by two miskicks by the Strollers' left-back that led to two goals. All in all however it was a scrappy game for the 4,000 crowd.
2. Sat-19-Aug-1922 [h] D2-2 Dundee Hibernian (Scottish Alliance)
DC 21/8/1922. Line-up and scorers as yet unsourced.
Dundee's first ever Alliance League match (their only season in the competition) was “encouraging” against Thistle's “smart reserves”.
3. Sat-26-Aug-1922 [a] L0-1 Rangers (Scottish Alliance)
SC 28/8/1922. Line-up as yet unsourced.
4. Sat-02-Sep-1922 [h] W4-1 Third Lanark (Scottish Alliance)
SP 3/9/1922. Line-up and scorers as yet unsourced.
5. Sat-16-Sep-1922 [h] L2-3 Airdrieonians (Scottish 2nd XI Cup 2nd Round)
CE 20/9/1922. Ferguson, Struthers, Meldrum, Gibson, Fyfe, Lyon, Blair, McMENEMY, McCOLL, McLachlan, McCombe. First round bye.
Things were looking good when McMenemy and McColl put Thistle 2-up but for some reason they faded and Airdrie reduced the lead before half-time. Two goals without reply notched up a cup win for them.
6. Sat-30-Sep-1922 [a] D2-2 Kilmarnock (Scottish Alliance)
KH 6/10/1922. Line-up and scorers as yet unsourced.
A scrappy game on a sodden pitch fittingly ended in a draw, neither team doing enough to merit both points. Thistle led 1-0 then a penalty levelled things just on half-time. Both teams scored in a dull second half.
7. Sat-07-Oct-1922 [h] W2-0 Kilmarnock (Scottish Alliance)
SP 8/10/1922. Line-up and scorers as yet unsourced.
8. Sat-21-Oct-1922 [h] W2-0 Dundee (Scottish Alliance)
DC 23/10/1922. CARLOW, McKECHNIE. Line-up as yet unsourced.
Carlow put Thistle ahead virtually from the kick-off and McKechnie doubled the lead. Trailing by two goals, Dundee looked the better side but their shooting was indifferent. In the end two bad defensive lapses cost them both points.
9. Sat-04-Nov-1922 [a] L0-2 Ayr United (Scottish Alliance)
SP 5/11/1922. Line-up as yet unsourced.
10. Sat-18-Nov-1922 [h] W4-1 Rangers (Scottish Alliance)
SP 19/11/1922. Line-up and scorers as yet unsourced.
11. Sat-25-Nov-1922 [a] L1-3 Aberdeen (Scottish Alliance)
APJ 27/11/1922. Wilkinson, Crichton, Harris, Ross, Fyfe, Lyon, Mackie, Johnstone, McLACHLAN, McDonald, McIntosh.
Thistle played some fine football. The play of McIntosh was sportingly applauded by the home crowd. A soft penalty for hand-ball by Crichton put them behind and they were 3-down before McLachlan scored from a fine solo run.
12. Sat-02-Dec-1922 [h] L1-3 Heart of Midlothian (Scottish Alliance)
SC 4/12/1922. Line-up and scorer as yet unsourced.
Sat-09-Dec-1922 [h] A1-2 St Mirren (Scottish Alliance - abandoned game)
Abandoned due to fog. SP lists the score, but GH reckons the game never kicked-off, which looks to be erroneous info on their part. Game was finally played on 24th March 1923.
13. Sat-16-Dec-1922 [h] W6-1 Ayr United (Scottish Alliance)
SP 17/12/1922. Line-up and scorers as yet unsourced.
14. Sat-23-Dec-1922 [a] W5-1 Raith Rovers (Scottish Alliance)
FFP 30/12/1922. Wilkinson, O'Hare, Malcolm, Johnstone, Fyfe, Lyon, McKechnie, McMenemy, McLAUGHLIN (3), GROVE, MACKIE.
Thistle were on the back foot for 20 minutes or so but they got a grip of the match and Mackie gave them the lead then McLaughlin doubled it before half-time. Goals by Grove and McLaughlin made it 4, Raith scored then McLaughlin got his hat-trick.
15. Tue-02-Jan-1923 [a] D1-1 Heart of Midlothian (Scottish Alliance)
SC 4/1/1923. CARLOW. Line-up as yet unsourced.
A tremendous display by keeper Wilkinson in the first half kept it at 0-0. Carlow scored then the Hearts keeper broke his thumb saving from McLaughlin. Hearts equalised then Fyfe missed a penalty. Hearts had the best of things but couldn't find a late winner.
16. Sat-06-Jan-1923 [h] L1-3 St Mirren (Scottish Alliance)
SP 7/1/1923. Line-up and scorer as yet unsourced.
17. Sat-20-Jan-1923 [a] L1-5 Airdrieonians (Scottish Alliance)
CL 27/1/1923. Line-up and scorer as yet unsourced.
Having scored first, Thistle shipped 5 goals without reply.
18. Sat-27-Jan-1923 [h] W1-0 Airdrieonians (Scottish Alliance)
CL 3/2/1923. Wilkinson, Johnstone, O'Hare, Gibson, LAMBIE, Lyon, McLachlan, McDonald, Carlow, Grove, Mackie.
Airdrie had the early chances then Lambie hit the bar following a corner. Airdrie then had a good spell up to half-time. Thistle kept up the pressure and finally Lambie found the corner with a strong drive. It was even but goalless till the end.
19. Sat-03-Feb-1923 [a] D1-1 Dundee Hibernian (Scottish Alliance)
DC & DET 5/2/1923. MASON. Line-up as yet unsourced. Line-up also included Johnstone (No 2), Johnstone (No 11), Bulloch, Gibson and Groves. "Bulloch (almost 40) is past his day".
A drab game. It took over an hour for things to liven up. A defensive error led to Thistle's goal scored by Mason. They were the better moving team but neither set of forwards impressed.
20. Sat-10-Feb-1923 [h] L0-2 Aberdeen (Scottish Alliance)
APJ. 12/2/1923. Ferguson, O'Hare, Smillie, Alexander, Smith, Johnstone, Mackie, McFarlane, McLachlan, Grove, Mason.
Thistle trailed at half-time. They had good chances but the Aberdeen keeper was in fine form. A shot off the bar and in doubled the lead and the points went north. The visitors were keener and sharper up front.
21. Sat-17-Feb-1923 [h] L0-1 Raith Rovers (Scottish Alliance)
FFP 24/2/1923. Mowat, Arnott, Meldrum, Wilson, Thomson, Lyon, Mackie, Gray, McDonald, Grove, Smith.
A narrow win but justified on play. Rovers were the better team - especially down the wings and their shooting was better. Mowat had a good game and kept them at bay but had to admit defeat once.
22. Sat-24-Feb-1923 [a] D2-2 Dundee (Scottish Alliance)
DC 26/2/1923. Line-up and scorers as yet unsourced.
23. Sat-03-Mar-1923 [a] W3-1 Albion Rovers (Scottish Alliance)
CE 7/3/1923. Ferguson, Young, Morrison, Macdonald, Meldrum, Lyon, MACKIE, Templeton, CARLOW, GROVE, Lindsay. Final Position: 8th of 14, 25/52 pts.
Cliftonville was in a terrible state” for this match which deservedly went Thistle's way. Grove put them ahead in the first half and Carlow scored in the second but Rovers reduced the lead before Mackie's solo run and shot made the points safe.
24. Sat-24-Mar-1923 [a] L1-2 St Mirren (Scottish Alliance)
SP 25/3/1923. Line-up and scorer as yet unsourced. Original game (9th Dec 1922) was abandoned.
25. Sat-31-Mar-1923 [h] W1-0 Albion Rovers (Scottish Alliance)
SP 1/4/1923. Line-up and scorer as yet unsourced.
26. Sat-21-Apr-1923 [a] L0-4 Queen's Park (Scottish Alliance)
SP 22/4/1923. Line-up as yet unsourced. This match took place at Hampden while the Scottish Amateur Athletic Association championships were being held!
27. Sat-28-Apr-1923 [a] D1-1 Third Lanark (Scottish Alliance)
SP 29/4/1923. Line-up and scorer as yet unsourced.
