1921-22 (Reserves)
The 47th season of Partick Thistle F.C.
scorers in CAPS
1. Thu-18-Aug-1921 [a] W3-2 Royal Albert (Fletcher Benefit)
HAD 20/8/1921. Line-up and scorers as yet unsourced. Testimonial for Royal Albert full-back Fletcher.
2. Sat-27-Aug-1921 [h] W1-0 Ayr United (Scottish Alliance)
SP 28/8/1921. Line-up and score as yet unsourced.
3. Sat-03-Sep-1921 [a] L0-3 Albion Rovers (Scottish 2nd XI Cup 1st Round)
CL 10/9/1921. McEwan, Davidson, Meldrum, Robertson, Gibson, Lyon, Cossar, McFarlane, Clark, McLean, Crawford.
Rovers made all the running but it took them 30 mins to open their account. A terrific 30-yarder followed. Thistle ran out of steam after half-time and were pinned back. It was no surprise when a third goal was scored.
4. Tue-06-Sep-1921 [a] W4-1 Ashfield (Opening of Pavillion)
DR 7/9/1921. 6.45pm, Saracen Park. Opening of the new pavillion. CLARK (3), COSSAR.
5. Sat-10-Sep-1921 [h] W2-1 Queen's Park (Scottish Alliance)
SP 11/9/1921. Line-up and scorers as yet unsourced.
6. Sat-17-Sep-1921 [h] L0-1 Kilmarnock (Scottish Alliance)
SP 18/9/1921. Line-up as yet unsourced.
7. Sat-24-Sep-1921 [a] L0-2 Heart of Midlothian (Scottish Alliance)
SC 26/9/1921. Line-up as yet unsourced.
8. Sat-01-Oct-1921 [a] D1-1 Raith Rovers (Scottish Alliance)
FFP 8/10/1921. Bernard, Milligan, Meldrum, Gibson (J), Gibson (N), Lyon, Cossar, Fisher, McNiven, McLean, McLaughlan. Report credits McKINNON as the Thistle scorer but he's not listed. Perhaps a misheard McNiven?
Rovers came to regret the chances they missed while on top. Play was even throughout but Rovers were more direct. Thistle took the lead (65) but Rovers scored soon after.
9. Sat-08-Oct-1921 [h] W2-1 Albion Rovers (Scottish Alliance)
CL 15/10/1921. Bernard, Rennie, Meldrum, Brown, Carnihan, Lyon, COSSAR, McFarlane, McMILLAN, Scott, Bowie.
Both sets of wingers were busy but too often their efforts were wasted by the front men. The second half saw some glaring misses by Thistle but Cossar eventually scored. Rovers hit the post then equalised but McMillan got the winner.
10. Sat-15-Oct-1921 [a] L1-2 Falkirk (Scottish Alliance)
FH 19/10/1921. Bernard, Rennie, Meldrum, Johnston, Carnahan, Gibson, Cossar, McFarlane, McNIVEN, McLean, Crawford.
Falkirk were the better team. They took the lead but McNiven equalised soon after from a poor clearance. Thistle had good spells without troubling the keeper whereas Bernard was busy. The winner spurred a late Thistle rally but to no avail.
11. Sat-22-Oct-1921 [h] W3-1 Hibernian (Scottish Alliance)
SC 24/10/1921. Line-up and scorers as yet unsourced.
12. Sat-29-Oct-1921 [a] W2-0 Hamilton Academical (Scottish Alliance)
HAD 5/11/1921. BALLANTYNE (2). Line-up as yet unsourced.
Thistle were “easily the better side” in this fixture although the home team was weakened by the absence of many of their regulars. Lyon at left-half was impressive. He made the opening for Ballantyne in the first half and he scored again for 2-0.
13. Sat-05-Nov-1921 [a] D0-0 Kilmarnock (Scottish Alliance)
DR 7/11/1921. Line-up as yet unsourced.
14. Sat-12-Nov-1921 [h] W4-1 Clydebank FC (Scottish Alliance)
DR 14/11/1921. Line-up and scorers as yet unsourced.
15. Sat-19-Nov-1921 [a] D2-2 St Mirren (Scottish Alliance)
DR 21/11/1921. Line-up and scorers as yet unsourced.
16. Sat-26-Nov-1921 [h] W7-1 Aberdeen (Scottish Alliance)
APJ 28/11/1921. McEwan, Borthwick, Bulloch, Meldrum, Carnihan, Lyon, Coggan, BALLANTYNE, McNIVEN (3), McFARLANE, SALISBURY.
Aberdeen reserves (including 4 debutants) were overwhelmed by Thistle who led 2-0 at half-time and ran riot in the second half. McNiven's hat-trick was a particular highlight.
17. Sat-03-Dec-1921 [a] D0-0 Motherwell (Scottish Alliance)
MT 9/12/1921. McEwan, Borthwick, Bulloch, Meldrum, Gibson, Lyon, Cossar, Ballantyne, McNiven, McFarlane, Bowie.
There was no shortage of effort or chances but neither team could convert theirs. McEwan had some fine saves during the spells of Motherwell pressure.
18. Sat-10-Dec-1921 [h] W1-0 Airdrieonians (Scottish Alliance)
DR 12/12/1921. Line-up and scorer as yet unsourced.
19. Sat-24-Dec-1921 [a] W2-0 Queen's Park (Scottish Alliance)
SP 25/12/1921. Line-up and scorers as yet unsourced.
20. Sat-31-Dec-1921 [h] W2-1 Dumbarton (Scottish Alliance)
SP 1/1/1922. Bernard, Meldrum, Borthwick, Russell, Ashley, SIMPSON, Cossar, Ballantyne, McNIVEN, White, Crawford.
Thistle racked up a number of corners to no effect then Bernard had some saves to make as Dumbarton hit back. Goalless at half-time, Simpson and McNiven scored to cancel out a goal by Dumbarton.
21. Sat-07-Jan-1922 [a] L0-2 Dundee (Scottish Alliance)
DC 9/1/1922. Line-up as yet unsourced. Line-up included McNiven, Carnahan, Meldrum and Crawford.
Thistle did everything but score in the first half. The gluepot surface took its toll and once Dundee scored (46) they never looked in any danger of losing. Thistle were second best except at full-back.
22. Sat-14-Jan-1922 [h] L0-1 Motherwell (Scottish Alliance)
MT 20/1/1922. McEwan, Ashley, Melvin, Crawford, McNiven, Lyons, Cossar, Ballantyne, Smith, Milligan, Bowie.
A tight game with nothing much to separate the teams. Thistle were the better combination but weaker at centre. Too often fine work by the wingers was wasted.
23. Sat-28-Jan-1922 [a] W2-1 Ayr United (Scottish Alliance)
SP 29/1/1922. Line-up and scorers as yet unsourced.
24. Sat-04-Feb-1922 [a] L0-2 Celtic (Scottish Alliance)

31. Sat-08-Apr-1922 [a] L1-3 Albion Rovers (Scottish Alliance)
SP 9/4/1922. Line-up and scorer as yet unsourced.
32. Sat-15-Apr-1922 [h] W3-1 Raith Rovers (Scottish Alliance)
FFP 22/4/1922. Bernard, Meldrum, Smith, Stanners, Ireland, Morrison, McKechnie, BALLANTYNE (3), Muir, McFarlane, Syme.
Rovers well beaten at Firhill Park”. They were no match for Thistle on the day and it was a personal triumph for Ballantyne with a first half hat-trick.
33. Wed-19-Apr-1922 [a] D2-2 Clydebank FC (John Ferguson Benefit)
GH 20/4/1922. SIMMS, McKECHNIE. Line-up as yet unsourced. Benefit match for Clydebank player Ferguson.
