1913-14 (Reserves)
The 39th season of Partick Thistle F.C.
scorers in CAPS
1. Sat-16-Aug-1913 [a] L0-2 Morton (Scottish Reserve League)
PGE 20/8/1913. Line-up as yet unsourced.
Morton, with several youngsters making their club debuts were good value for their win. “Morton were the superior side”.
2. Sat-23-Aug-1913 [h] D0-0 Renton (Scottish Reserve League)
SR 25/8/1913. Line-up as yet unsourced. Line-up included Gardiner, McIntyre, Weir.
Weak finishing and splendid goalkeeping combined to leave this match goalless. Thistle had most of the attacking play in both halves but it was little wonder they drew a blank. Credit went to Renton for their away point.
3. Sat-30-Aug-1913 [a] D0-0 Ayr United (Scottish Reserve League)
SR 1/9/1913. Thistle (predicted) per SR (29/8/1913): Colquhoun, Dunsmore, Marshall, Walker, Davidson, Stevenson, Allan, Robertson, Morrison, Weir, McIntyre.
4. Sat-06-Sep-1913 [h] W1-0 Morton (Scottish 2nd XI Cup 1st Round)
SR 8/9/1913. GROSSMITH. Line-up as yet unsourced, but also included Shaw and Davidson.
Robertson wasted a golden opportunity early on but Grossmith scored soon after and Thistle held the lead until half-time, sharing the attacks with Morton. Neither team managed a goal in the second half although a great save denied McIntyre late on.
5. Sat-13-Sep-1913 [h] D1-1 Kilmarnock (Scottish Reserve League)
SR 15/9/1913. MORRISON. Line-up as yet unsourced.
Colquhoun saved the day in the early minutes to deny Kilmarnock who were the better moving team but both sets of forwards were poor. Kilmarnock scored after half-time but Morrison equalised. It could have finished either way but a draw was fair.
6. Sat-20-Sep-1913 [h] D1-1 Rangers (Scottish Reserve League)
SR 22/9/1913. ADAM (pen). Line-up as yet unsourced, but also included Colquhoun, McIntyre and Shaw.
A poor game with little to enthuse over. The forwards were “lamentably weak”. Rangers' goal was a gift when a clearance from his hands by Colquhoun hit a forward's boot and went in. A penalty by Adam after half-time earned a point.
7. Sat-27-Sep-1913 [a] L1-4 St Mirren (Scottish 2nd XI Cup Quarter Final)
SR 29/9/1913. MORRISON. Line-up as yet unsourced, but also included Robertson.
A header put St Mirren up (2) then Stevenson saw his penalty smothered at the second attempt. Saints were the better team and were 3-0 up at half-time. Massie was a busy keeper but Morrison reduced the lead before it was restored late on.
8. Sat-04-Oct-1913 [a] L1-2 Queen's Park (Scottish Reserve League)
SR 6/10/1913. ROBERTSON. Line-up as yet unsourced, but also included Davidson.
Duncan went close early on then McGhie had a good save. Dunsmore injured his ankle and had to retire but the ten men took the game to the Strollers and a fine run and shot by Robertson put them ahead. Two goals in the last 15 mins turned it round.
9. Sat-11-Oct-1913 [h] W2-0 Motherwell (Scottish Reserve League)
MT 17/10/1913. McGhie, Ross, Adams, Morrison, Davidson, McMillan, Allan, Robertson, HARRIS (N), McINTYRE, Duncan.
McIntyre gave the keeper no chance from close in (5) then Motherwell had a good spell. McIntyre hit the post and Harris had no difficulty netting the rebound. Thistle were second best after half-time and McGhie had some fine saves to keep a clean sheet.
10. Sat-25-Oct-1913 [h] W3-1 Dumbarton Harp (Scottish Reserve League)
SR 27/10/1913. HARRIS, McINTYRE, GARDINER. Line-up as yet unsourced.
Harris gave Thistle an early lead with a header from a corner then the prominent McIntyre made it 2-0. A long drooping shot by Gardiner deceived the keeper (50). A defensive misunderstanding saw the ball trickle into the net for 3-1.
11. Sat-01-Nov-1913 [a] D1-1 Motherwell (Scottish Reserve League)
MT 7/11/1913. Colquhoun, Adams, Ferrans, Weir, Allan, McMillan, Morrison, McTavish, HARRIS, Gittins, Duncan.
Thistle had an early chance then an og by Adams was narrowly averted. Colquhoun was the busier keeper right up to half-time. Harris scored from distance but Motherwell levelled (75). It could have gone either way after that. 1-1 was fair enough.
12. Sat-08-Nov-1913 [h] L1-2 Clyde (Scottish Reserve League)
SR 10/11/1913. NAISMITH. Line-up as yet unsourced, but also included Adams. Scorer Naismith wasn't in the (SR) predicted: E. McGhie, Davidson, Adams, Allan, W. Hamilton, McMillan, Rae, McTavish, N. Harris, Gittins, Robertson.
Harris wasted a good cross by Gettins before Clyde had a spell of pressure and McGhie had some saves to make. Harris missed another chance then Clyde scored. Naismith equalised late on but Clyde rallied and got the winner to take both points.
13. Sat-15-Nov-1913 [h] W3-2 Heart of Midlothian (Scottish Reserve League)
SR 17/11/1913. BROWN (2), HAMILTON. Line-up as yet unsourced, but also included Harris and Thom.
Thistle adapted to the sodden conditions the better and Brown gave them a half-time lead. The Hearts goalkeeper was seen to collapse in his goalmouth and was carried off. Hamilton and Brown scored but the 10 men scored twice for an anxious finish.
14. Sat-22-Nov-1913 [a] W2-1 Renton (Scottish Reserve League)
SR 24/11/1903. HARRIS (2). Line-up as yet unsourced, but also included McGhie, Davidson, Bryce, Hynds and Weir.
After an even start Harris scored (20) then Thistle were awarded a penalty but Harris hit the bar. Renton scored just on half-time. They were awarded a penalty but it went over the bar. Harris got the winner (80) but, on play, Renton deserved a point.
15. Sat-29-Nov-1913 [h] W2-1 Queen's Park (Scottish Reserve League)
SR 1/12/1913. McINTYRE, HARRIS. Line-up as yet unsourced.
Thistle edged the early play and Harris scored thanks to fine play by Hynds. The Strollers had a decent spell but it was Thistle who doubled the lead when a shot hit the post and McIntyre finished off. One goal after half-time was all Queens could manage.
16. Sat-06-Dec-1913 [h] D0-0 Stevenston United (Scottish Reserve League)
SR 8/12/1913. Line-up as yet unsourced, but also included Colquhoun.
On a frozen pitch the teams did their best but a goalless stalemate was a fair reflection of the match. Chances were scarce and when they were created they weren't taken. Davidson was a stalwart in defence.
17. Sat-13-Dec-1913 [h] W6-1 Morton (Scottish Reserve League)
SR 15/12/1913. GETTINS (2), HARRIS (2), McINTYRE, RAE. Line-up as yet unsourced.
A strong Thistle selection was too much for Morton. Gettins scored twice then Harris put them 3-up. They missed a penalty before McIntyre made it 4-0 at half-time. Rae and Harris scored after half-time and a solitary goal was Morton's consolation.
18. Sat-20-Dec-1913 [a] L1-2 Rangers (Scottish Reserve League)
SR 22/12/1913. McGINN. Line-up as yet unsourced, but also included Morrison, McIntyre and Rae.
Much of the first half play was even. Rangers hit the post then McGinn made it 1-0 half-time. It was only in the second half that the pressure mounted. Rangers equalised with a free-kick and went on to find a winner.
19. Fri-02-Jan-1914 [a] W2-1 Kirkintilloch Rob Roy (Friendly)
MBH 9/1/1914. Colquhoun, Craig, Davidson, Lister, Allan, Weir, Robertson, HANNAH (2), Morrison, Gettins, McIntyre.
A goal in either half by Hannah won this holiday friendly at Kelvinside Park. Rob Roy gave a good account of themselves and Colquhoun had some saving to do. A penalty in the second half made it 2-1.
20. Sat-17-Jan-1914 [h] W2-0 St Mirren (Scottish Reserve League)
SR 19/1/1914. Line-up and scorers as yet unsourced.
21. Sat-24-Jan-1914 [a] L3-4 Dumbarton Harp (Scottish Reserve League)
SR 26/1/1914. RAE, GETTINS, MARSHALL. Line-up as yet unsourced, but also included trialist McLean of Cathcart Juniors.
Harp took the lead (25) but Rae scored just on half-time. Thistle went 3-1 down then Colquhoun went off injured. McKenzie taking over in goal. Soon it was 4-1 then Gettins scored. The Harp keeper also went off injured. Marshal made it 4-3.
22. Sat-31-Jan-1914 [h] W4-3 Clyde (Glasgow 2nd XI Cup Semi Final)
SR 2/2/1914. Colquhoun, Hamilton, McKenzie, Allan, Shinwell, Weir, RAE, Morrison, Harris, GETTINS (2), BRANSCOMBE. Quarter Final bye.
Thistle were on top in the first half. Rae scored then 2 goals from Gettins in 3 minutes made it 3-0. Two goals for Clyde (the second a pen) and one from Branscombe made it 4-2 at half-time. Clyde hit the post but scored near the end.
23. Sat-07-Feb-1914 [a] L0-1 Stevenston United (Scottish Reserve League)
SR 9/2/1914. Line-up as yet unsourced.
The match was evenly balanced. The homesters had spells of pressure but Colquhoun had some good saves. Thistle were dangerous on the break. A penalty just on half-time was enough to earn both points for the Ayrshire side.
24. Sat-21-Feb-1914 [h] L0-2 Ayr United (Scottish Reserve League)
SR 23/2 & DR 20/2/1914. (Predicted) Colquhoun, Davidson, Dunsmore, McCaig, Shemwell, Harris (J), Allan, Morrison, Harris (N), Gittins, McIntyre. Confirmed line-up as yet unsourced.
25. Sat-14-Mar-1914 [a] W2-0 Kilmarnock (Scottish Reserve League)
KH 20/3/1914. WEIR, McDOUGALL. Line-up as yet unsourced.
Played on a quagmire of a pitch. Kilmarnock were the better team but it was Thistle who went ahead with a Weir header (20). From then on Thistle improved, Kilmarnock got worse and McDougall scored towards the end.
26. Sat-04-Apr-1914 [h] W3-1 Galston (Scottish Reserve League)
SR 6/4/1914. MARSHALL (2), McTAVISH. Line-up as yet unsourced.
The first half was fairly even but Marshall gave Thistle a half-time lead. He scored again as did McTavish, Galston also scoring. Thistle frittered away numerous chances and it should have been more convincing.
27. Tue-07-Apr-1914 [a] D0-0 St Mirren (Scottish Reserve League)
DR 8/4/1914. Line-up as yet unsourced.
28. Sat-11-Apr-1914 [a] L1-2 Heart of Midlothian (Scottish Reserve League)
SR 13/4/1914. HARRIS. Line-up as yet unsourced.
Hearts secured the championship after a narrow win. They had more to offer up front but Thistle ran them close. Some fine goalkeeping kept Hearts at bay in the first half. They took the lead after half-time but Harris equalised. The winner was deserved.
29. Tue-14-Apr-1914 [a] W2-1 Maryhill (Friendly)
DR 15/4/1914. Line-up and scorers as yet unsourced. Line-up included Raisbeck.
30. Tue-21-Apr-1914 [a] W2-0 Rangers (Glasgow 2nd XI Cup Final)
DR 22/4/1914. Colquhoun, Davidson, McKenzie, McCaig, Hamilton, McMullan, HAMILTON (J), Morrison, Harris (N), Harris (J), McINTYRE. WINNERS.
A poor first half was not worthy of a cup final but the second half was better. Hamilton finished off a McIntyre cross then, confidence growing, Hamilton crossed for McIntyre to score. There was no 5th consecutive cup win for a poor Rangers side.
31. Sat-25-Apr-1914 [a] D4-4 Galston (Scottish Reserve League)
SC 27/4/1914. Line-up and scorers as yet unsourced.
Thu-30-Apr-1914 [a] U?-? Clyde (Scottish Reserve League)
SFHA. Score, line-up and scorers as yet unsourced.
1913-14 Reserves summary notes

P31 W14 D8 L9 (1.613 ppg)

Historical PT Reserves average: 1.462 ppg (@ 22-Aug-2023)
  • The points-per-game measurements (ppg) above are calculated on the same principle as the first-team's all games category, and are based on 1 point for a draw and 3 points for a win across all eras.
  • Final League Position: 7th of 14, 26/52 pts. We've listed the Clyde [a] game as it was dated for 30th April in the SFHA, and there's every chance it was played, although the scoreline remains elusive. Thistle are therefore known to have played 25 of 26. All but two teams fulfilled their fixtures.
