The 38th season of Partick Thistle F.C.
scorers in CAPS
1. Sat-24-Aug-1912 [a] L0-3 Kilmarnock (Scottish Reserve League)
SR 26/8/1911. Line-up as yet unsourced.
2. Sat-31-Aug-1912 [h] W1-0 Queen's Park (Scottish Reserve League)
SR 2/9/1912. JOHNSTONE. Line-up as yet unsourced. Line-up also included Gettings, McLachlan and McIntyre.
Thistle had their chances but the Strollers' keeper was a match for them until Johnstone finally scored. A better second half saw both teams improve and chances came and went at both ends. Both sets of forwards had an off day.
Mon-02-Sep-1912 [n] U?-? Clyde (Clydebank Brass Band Fundraiser)
Fund raiser for Clydebank brass band. Advertised for this date in SR. Played at Kilbowie Park.
3. Sat-07-Sep-1912 [a] L0-3 Motherwell (Scottish Reserve League)
MT 13/9/1912. Line-up as yet unsourced.
4. Sat-21-Sep-1912 [h] W5-0 Arthurlie (Scottish 2nd XI Cup 1st Round)
SR 23/9/1912. Houston, Fletcher, Dunsmore, McLachan, Davidson, McLELLAN, Gillespie, Gettings, LOWRY (2), GARDINER, Coham. (1 og.)
Arthurlie were seldom seen in attack as Thistle dominated the first half. Gardiner from close in then two from Lowry made it 3-0 at half-time. A headed og and a goal from McLellan finished off an emphatic win.
5. Sat-12-Oct-1912 [h] L0-3 Motherwell (Scottish 2nd XI Cup Quarter Final)
SR14/10/1912. Thomson, Fletcher, Lumsden, McLachan, Lowry, Davidson, Steel, Gillespie, Morrison, McLellan, Coham.
Thistle could make no impression on a solid Motherwell defence then a penalty put the visitors ahead and it was 3-0 at half-time. Motherwell's defence repelled Thistle's attacks and, in fact, only some fine saves by Thomson prevented a heavier defeat.
6. Sat-02-Nov-1912 [h] D1-1 Kilmarnock (Scottish Reserve League)
KH 8/11/1912. Houston, Fletcher, Dunsmuir, McLachlan, Davidson, Thomson, Steel, McLellan, LOWRY, Morrison, McIntyre.
Both teams enjoyed spells of pressure and chances. Kilmarnock looked the better side and took the lead following a corner. Lowry equalised after half-time at which point both teams went all out for the winner - without success.
7. Sat-16-Nov-1912 [h] W3-2 Renton (Scottish Reserve League)
SR 18/11/1912. McINTYRE, DAVIDSON, LOWRY. Line-up as yet unsourced.
Renton were the better team throughout and deserved at least a draw. They led 2-0 and Houston was a busy keeper. McIntyre pulled one back before half-time. Davidson equalised and Lowry scored the winner with the last kick of the game.
8. Sat-23-Nov-1912 [h] L0-1 St Mirren (Scottish Reserve League)
SR 25/11/1912. Line-up as yet unsourced. Line-up included McIntyre, Lister, Davidson and Houston.
A single goal in the second half separated two well-matched sides. They both enjoyed periods of pressure but the defences were equal to the challenge and the keepers were in fine form.
9. Sat-07-Dec-1912 [a] L1-3 Queen's Park (Scottish Reserve League)
SR 9/12/1912. LOWRY. Line-up as yet unsourced. Line-up also included McIntyre, Fletcher and Dunsmore.
Thistle's bright start faded and Queens had all the attacking play. McTurk in goal had some fine saves to keep it 0-0 at half-time. On the hour mark Queens scored and soon it was 2-0 from a scrimmage. Lowry reduced the lead but it ended 3-1.
10. Sat-14-Dec-1912 [a] D2-2 Dumbarton Harp (Scottish Reserve League)
SR 16/12/1912. Adamson, Houston, Dunsmore, McKay, Stevenson, McLellan, Farrell, Johnstone, TEMPLETON, Weir, MORRISON.
Harp took an early lead but Templeton made it all square at half-time. Morrison put Thistle ahead (50) but a penalty was converted for 2-2 (65). On the balance of play Harp had the better of the second half but couldn't break down the Thistle defence.
11. Sat-04-Jan-1913 [h] L1-2 Motherwell (Scottish Reserve League)
MT 10/1/1913. STEEL (pen). Line-up as yet unsourced.
A penalty gave Motherwell the lead then they increased it a couple of minutes later. Another penalty, this time for Thistle, was converted by Steel. Defences were on top after half-time but if anything Motherwell looked the more likely to score again.
12. Sat-11-Jan-1913 [h] W2-0 Falkirk (Scottish Reserve League)
SR 13/1/1913. Houston, Fletcher, Dunsmore, McLellan, Davidson, McKay, Neil, STEEL (2), Quigley, Weir, Jamieson. Curiously, the FH report says abandoned 81 mins (snow). No mention of this in SR or trace of a replay.
On a snow covered pitch Thistle made a good start, Robertson going close then Dunsmore miskicked on to his own crossbar. Jamieson wasted a chance just on half-time. Two late goals by Steel turned the game in Thistle's favour.
13. Sat-18-Jan-1913 [a] L1-3 St Mirren (Scottish Reserve League)
SR 20/1/1913. Houston, Fletcher, Dunsmore, McKay, Davidson, McLellan, Steel, Robertson, Quigley, Weir, DAVIDSON (W).
Chances were made at both ends then Davidson scored as the keeper was put under pressure. Two penalties converted after half-time made it 2-1 and as Thistle faded, St Mirren got on top and a trialist completed his hat-trick.
14. Sat-25-Jan-1913 [h] D2-2 Queen's Park (Glasgow 2nd XI Cup Quarter Final)
SR 27/1/1913. Houston, Davidson, Fletcher, McKay, Stevenson, McLelland, Marshall, ROBERTSON, Logan, Weir, STEEL.
2,000 saw Thistle have the best of things but their shooting was ineffective and they were almost caught out on the break. Steel and Robertson put them 2-up after half-time but a breakaway led to the lead being reduced and an equaliser came near the end.
15. Sat-01-Feb-1913 [h] W3-2 Rangers (Friendly)
SR 3/2/1913. Line-up as yet unsourced. SRL fixture "converted" due to pitch conditions. "JOHNSTONE" (2), ROBERTSON. Line-up also included McLellan and Steel. "Johnstone" was reported to be a prominent amateur.
Rangers took the lead (2) and almost immediately scored again. “Johnstone” scored twice. Houston had some fine saves to prevent Rangers going ahead then on a breakaway Marshall set up Robertson for the winner.
16. Sat-15-Feb-1913 [a] W3-2 Motherwell (Friendly)
SR 17/2/1913. Line-up and scorers as yet unsourced. Curiously, listed as Reserve League game in the Referee, although the fixture had already been played back on 12th October 1912, so a bit of a mystery. Here labelled as a "friendly" in the meantime…
The match at Fir Park was well attended and the Motherwell team included several juniors. There was little to choose between the sides for the best part of the game. Thistle led the scoring throughout and finished the match strongly.
17. Sat-22-Feb-1913 [a] L0-1 Falkirk (Scottish Reserve League)
SR 24/2/1913 & FH 26/2/1913. Houston, Fletcher, Dunsmore, McKay, Davidson, McLellan, Steel, Weir, Templeton, Logan, Quigley. Thistle's 5 forwards included 4 centre-forwards but they drew a blank.
Thistle had occasional spells of fruitless pressure but play was largely with the home team. Their keeper went off for a spell (injured hand) but his deputy was seldom troubled. The winner came early in the second half and it could have been 2-0 soon after.
18. Sat-01-Mar-1913 [a] D1-1 Rangers (Scottish Reserve League)
SR 3/3/1913. Houston, Fletcher, Allan, McKay, Davidson, Stevenson, Steel, Robertson, HAMILTON, Weir, Morrison.
After an early spell of pressure Hamilton finished off a Steel cross. Defences were on top and the forwards made little impression. The second half was little changed. Thistle failed to add to their lead and Rangers scored rather against the run of play.
19. Sat-08-Mar-1913 [a] W1-0 Renton (Scottish Reserve League)
SR 10/3/1913. McINTYRE. Line-up as yet unsourced. Line-up also included Davidson, Dunsmore, Houston, Fletcher, McKay, Steel and Templeton.
Thistle were the better team in the first half, although Renton lost their centre-forward to injury for about 30 minutes. The home team were better after the break and did everything but score. McIntyre did (75).
Mon-24-Mar-1913 [h] U?-? Dumbarton Harp (Scottish Reserve League)
SR 24/3/1913. Line-up as yet unsourced. A full preview and advert for this holiday Monday 3pm kick-off at Firhill suggests this game took place as described but, alas, no scoreline or report has been found.
20. Sat-05-Apr-1913 [a] W1-0 Queen's Park (Glasgow 2nd XI Cup Quarter Final replay)
SR 7/4/1913. TEMPLETON. Line-up as yet unsourced. Line-up also included McIntyre, Davidson, Dunsmore and Houston.
Facing the wind in the first half, Thistle were mostly on the defensive. Queens' wingers were a handful but poor finishing let them down. In the second half Thistle had the advantage and Templeton scored the only goal from a cross from the left.
21. Sat-12-Apr-1913 [a] L1-4 Rangers (Glasgow 2nd XI Cup Semi Final)
SR 14/4/1913. Houston, McKenzie, Adams, Wilson, Hamilton, Gardiner, Morrison, Robertson, TEMPLETON, Logan, McIntyre.
Rangers got off to a good start, scoring after 14 mins and dominated until half-time with two more goals. It was 4-0 before Templeton pulled one back but Thistle were second best throughout. “The display given by Partick Thistle was by no means brilliant”.
22. Thu-24-Apr-1913 [h] L0-2 Glasgow Perthshire (Friendly)
EEN 25/4/1913. Line-up as yet unsourced.
23. Wed-30-Apr-1913 [h] W2-1 Rangers (Scottish Reserve League)
GH 1/5/1913. Colquhoun, Dunsmore, McKenzie, Morrison, DAVIDSON, Gardner, Gowans, Kelly, HAMILTON, Telfer, Branscombe. Att:3,500.
3,000 saw Rangers almost take the lead then Hamilton scored following a fine run by Branscombe (15). Colquhoun failed to hold a low shot and it was 1-1. Davidson made it 2-1 (55) then Rangers hit the bar. They had a strong finish but couldn't find another goal.
1912-13 Reserves summary notes

P23 W9 D4 L10 (1.348 ppg)

Historical PT Reserves average: 1.462 ppg (@ 22-Aug-2023)
  • The points-per-game measurements (ppg) above are calculated on the same principle as the first-team's all games category, and are based on 1 point for a draw and 3 points for a win across all eras.
  • All games where the outcome is unknown (U) are excluded from the game count / stats summary.
  • Final League Position: 7th of 10, 13/36 pts. To the best of our knowledge, Aberdeen [a] & Aberdeen [h] were not played. We've listed the Dumbarton Harp [h] game as it was advertised in the SR (24/3/1913 - i.e. the actual day of the match), and there's every chance it was played, although the scoreline remains elusive. Thistle are therefore known to have played 15 of 18.
