After some early St Mirren pressure Thistle broke away and Drummond latched on to a long clearance, crossed and it was tucked away. The second half was full of “stiff and close play” and St Mirren emerged the winners.

Thistle played the football, Kilbarchan the kick and rush. It was 3-0 at half-time then Kilbarchan missed a penalty. A fourth goal added to their misery.
9. Sat-05-Nov-1898 [a] W1-0 Port Glasgow Athletic Juniors (Friendly)
SR 7/11/1898. Line-up and scorer as yet unsourced.
A lucky goal scored in the early minutes was enough to win this friendly. It was well contested and both keepers has lots of work to do.

GT 13/2/1899. McNICOL (3). Line-up and remaining scorer as yet unsourced. Thistle line-up also included Lamb, Cairney, Hill, Campbell, Drummond and Caldwell.
Thistle led 2-0 at half-time but Port played creditably in the second half and the teams shared 4 goals. McNicol was in sparkling form and had the ball in the net 5 times but 2 were ruled offside.
14. Sat-18-Feb-1899 [a] L2-3 Strathclyde Rovers (Friendly)
SR 24/2/1899. Line-up and scorers as yet unsourced.
Such was the display of the Rovers - and in particular their player Marshall - Thistle officials took a note of his address at the end of the match.

SR 13/3/1899. Mackie, Hill, Campbell, McNicoll, Chirney, Allan, Drummond, Caldwell, Paul (J), Brydon, Lamb. Scorers as yet unsourced. Semi Final was the 1st Round as such.
Thistle “a weightier and more resolute team” surprised Queens with an early goal. Despite poor finishing they equalised but two goals (a free-kick then a ball fisted in and missed by the ref) put Thistle 3-1 up. Both teams scored once after half-time.

GH 3/4/1899. Line-up and scorer as yet unsourced.

Thistle did well to match Rangers in a goalless first half but after half-time Rangers took control and ran out deserved winners.
1898-99 Reserves summary notes

P17 W12 D0 L5 (2.118 ppg)

Historical PT Reserves average: 1.464 ppg (@ 23-May-2023)
  • The points-per-game measurements (ppg) above are calculated on the same principle as the first-team's all games category, and are based on 1 point for a draw and 3 points for a win across all eras.
  • Thistle should have played 14 fixtures in the 8-team Scottish Federation, but three are either unfulfilled or unsourced; Cameronians (away), Linthouse (home) & St Mirren (home). The SFHA table confirms this unsatisfactory chaos, with teams playing anywhere from 6 to 11 games.
