1897-98 (Reserves)
The 23rd season of Partick Thistle F.C.
scorers in CAPS
1. Sat-04-Sep-1897 [a] L1-3 Longriggend Rovers (Friendly)
SR 6/9/1897. Line-up and scorer as yet unsourced.
If the Partick Thistle 'A' team cannot do better that they did on Saturday… then the committee will have an easy time in choosing their first eleven.
2. Sat-25-Sep-1897 [a] L0-2 Dalziel Rovers (Friendly)
MT 1/10/1897. Line-up as yet unsourced.
3. Sat-02-Oct-1897 [h] W5-2 Motherwell (Scottish 2nd XI Cup 2nd Round)
MT 8/10/1897. Line-up and scorers as yet unsourced. Thistle entered at the second round stage.
Thistle led 2-1 at half-time but soon it was all square. Three goals in the last 20 minutes as the Motherwell defence fell to pieces made for a comfortable win. But for the form of the home keeper it would have been more emphatic.
4. Sat-16-Oct-1897 [a] W?-? Ayr (Scottish 2nd XI Cup Quarter Final
SR 15/10/1897. Won. Score not known. (Predicted) Wilson, King, Crombe, Shannon, Goodwin, Reid, Lawson, McDonald, Legge, Ferguson, Morrison. Confirmed line-up and scorer(s) as yet unsourced.
5. Sat-30-Oct-1897 [n] W8-2 Dundee (Scottish 2nd XI Cup Semi Final)
SR 1/11/1897. Govandale Park. Wilson, King, Hirst, Shannon, MacPherson, McDonald, Lawson, PEARSON, Legge, FERGUSON, Morrison. Remaining scorers as yet unsourced.
Dundee led 2-0 at half-time largely because Thistle's forwards “gave a poor exhibition.” Transformation in the second half began after 3 minutes when Ferguson scored, Pearson soon after. Dundee's defence fell apart and Thistle ran out emphatic winners.
6. Sat-13-Nov-1897 [h] W1-0 Queen's Park (Friendly)
SR 15/11/1897. Wilson, King, Hirst, Reid, Harvey, McDonald, Lawson, Pearson, JOHNSTON, Legge, Morrison.
Thistle got lucky when a Queens player was clean through but slipped on the dodgy surface at the vital moment. The game settled down and a solitary goal by Johnston “a high slanting shot” beat the keeper.
7. Sat-20-Nov-1897 [a] W3-0 Campsie Black Watch (Friendly)
FH 27/11/1897. Line-up and scorers as yet unsourced.
8. Sat-04-Dec-1897 [a] L2-4 Irvine (Friendly)
SR 6/12/1897. Line-up and scorer as yet unsourced.
9. Sat-11-Dec-1897 [a] L0-1 Rutherglen Glencairn (Friendly)
SR 13/12/1897. Line-up as yet unsourced.
There was not much between the teams in terms of play in general but the forwards of both teams were poor. A single goal early in the second half was enough to separate them despite Thistle's strenuous efforts to equalise.
10. Sat-25-Dec-1897 [h] W2-0 Wishaw Rovers (Friendly)
SR 27/12/1897. Wilson, King, Reid, Douglas, Colburn, MacDonald, Strathern, Legge, JOHNSTON (A), Morrison, JOHNSTONE (J).
Wishaw had their fair share of the play but Thistle restricted them to shooting from distance. Johnstone (A) opened for them from a scrimmage. Johnstone (J) doubled the lead (50) then Legge “scored” twice but both were disallowed.
11. Sat-08-Jan-1898 [n] L0-6 Rangers (Scottish 2nd XI Cup Final)
SR 10/1/1898. Wilson, King, Morrison, Douglas, Harvey, McDonald, Gourlay, Legge, Johnstone, Strathearn, Clelland. Govandale Park.
Rangers 'A' romp home.” Weakened by withdrawals to the 1st XI Cup tie at Dundee and injury to Clelland who was “useless” for most of the game, Thistle put up some resistance in the first half and went in 2-down but they were swamped after half-time.
