1884-85 (Reserves)
The tenth season of Partick Thistle F.C.
scorers in CAPS
1. Sat-23-Aug-1884 [a] D1-1 Morton (Friendly)
GT 28/8/1884. Line-up and scorer as yet unsourced.
2. Sat-20-Sep-1884 [a] D2-2 Alloa Athletic (Friendly)
AA 27/9/1884. Line-up and scorers as yet unsourced.
Thistle attacked from the start and took the lead from a scrimmage (Alloa claiming off-side). They scored again just after half-time but Alloa reduced the lead then the Thistle keeper was charged into the net (too slow to clear his save) for 2-2.
3. Sat-11-Oct-1884 [h] W5-2 Falkirk (Friendly)
SO 13/10/1884. Line-up and scorers as yet unsourced. Played at Muir Park. First teams met at Falkirk on the same day.

5. Sat-27-Dec-1884 [a] L0-1 Kilmarnock Athletic (Friendly)
NBDM 29/12/1884. Line-up as yet unsourced.
On Holm Quarry ground. After an exciting game in which the home team maintained their good name, the match ended in their favour by one goal to none.
6. Fri-02-Jan-1885 [a] D1-1 Angus Athletic (Friendly)
DC 3/1/1885. Line-up and scorer as yet unsourced. Played Our Boys Dundee the same day. Assumed this was the 2nd XI selection. Forfar club.
7. Sat-03-Jan-1885 [a] L2-5 Strathmore (Friendly)
AG 10/1/1885. 11.30am at Damley Park. Confusingly, the reserves played this Strathmore (Arbroath) on the same day that the first team played Strathmore (Dundee)!
Each side scored two goals in the first period but, according to the local reporter, it became evident in the second half that the Strathmore was the stronger team, and they drew praise for a good passing game.
8. Sat-10-Jan-1885 [a] W3-1 Port Glasgow Athletic (Friendly)
GH 12/1/1885. Line-up and scorers as yet unsourced.
Played in very disagreeable weather at Port Glasgow.” The score was 1-1 at half-time but 2 more goals gave Thistle a comfortable win.
9. Sat-31-Jan-1885 [a] L2-3 St Mirren (Friendly)
GEP 31/1/1885. Line-up and scorers as yet unsourced.
10. Sat-28-Feb-1885 [a] D3-3 Rosevale (Friendly)
GEP 28/2/1885. Line-up and scorers as yet unsourced.
11. Sat-28-Mar-1885 [a] L1-3 Heart of Midlothian (Friendly)
EEN 30/3/1885. Line-up and scorer as yet unsourced.
12. Sat-11-Apr-1885 [a] W3-2 Falkirk (Friendly)
FH 18/4/1885. Line-up and scorers as yet unsourced. Thistle played part of the match with 10 men.
Played on a dreadful surface, neither side was at full strength. Falkirk played down hill (!) and with the wind but it was Thistle who led 3-0 at half-time. The second half was almost the reverse but Falkirk only scored twice.
1884-85 Reserves summary notes

P12 W4 D4 L4 (1.333 ppg)

Historical PT Reserves average: 1.462 ppg (@ 22-Aug-2023)
  • The points-per-game measurements (ppg) above are calculated on the same principle as the first-team's all games category, and are based on 1 point for a draw and 3 points for a win across all eras.
  • NBDM (1/9/1884) reported the draw for the 1st round of the Scottish 2nd XI Cup; Partick Thistle was not included. It listed 11 clubs - including Thistle - who had been “struck off the roll” because their subscriptions were unpaid. Oh, the ignominy!
